2014 Book Challenges

It's 2014, guys! Time to forget everything that happened in 2013 and focus on what really matters: BOOKS.

What, did you think I was going to say family or relationships or something? Please.

A new year brings new resolutions and challenges. With that said, may I be the first to welcome you to the 2014 Fifty Two Book Challenge! If you're tired of that from last year, I'd like to present a whole new challenge, the Series in a Year Challenge.

The Fifty Two Book Challenge is easy. You have to read fifty two books in 2014. In 2013, I beat the challenge and read 59 and 1/3 books! It was going to be sixty, but the holidays happened and you know how it is. Still, I won! I beat the PANTS off that challenge! I owned it so hard. This year I'm starting off a little behind because it's the eighth day of the new year and I haven't finished a single book. I blame it on the insane cold (I don't want to take my gloves off to read on the train) and just being a little burned out. I have tons of shiny new books but no real drive to start any of them yet. Book ennui.

What types of books count towards the Fifty Two Book Challenge? Almost anything! Fiction, non-fiction, e-books and e-novellas, graphic novels (the collected editions, not single monthly issues), manga and short stories. What doesn't count? Magazines, online articles, monthly single comic issues, newspapers, online comics. I'm also going to make an executive decision and say that academic papers don't count either. Sorry, grad students!

The other challenge I've taken up is just as fun and possibly even slightly more challenging. Pick a book series you love or one you've been meaning to read, one that has a significant amount of volumes, and read one chapter a day until you finish the series. You'd be surprised how long this can take! I've taken up the challenge of re-reading the Harry Potter series this year, reading just one chapter before bed. I kept meaning to re-read Harry Potter but there's so much else going on in my life I simply can't take the time to plow through all seven books at once. Instead, I'm spreading it out. If I don't skip any days, I will be finished the Harry Potter series in August. AUGUST!

This is less a challenge and more of a way to easily revisit a series you keep meaning to read but can't find the time. Other series that would be perfect for this challenge are the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, the Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis, The Lord of the Rings series (plus the Hobbit!) from Tolkien or George RR Martin's Game of Thrones.

Oh, and your nightly reading WILL count towards the Fifty Two Book Challenge! Bonus!

So, what reading challenges are you embarking on this year?

  1. I'm in! I am doing the 52 book challenge. I already do a modified one-chapter challenge with the kiddos. :)

This year I am continuing my challenge to have at least one book per month come from my backlog of books languishing on my kindle and bookshelves.

  2. I'm down for it!! I'm a book and a half in so far so...yay!

  3. I'm in too! I killed it last year and I'm pretty sure this year won't be a problem either, but it's still fun to keep track. I'm with Kathy. I own so many books, I've started to forget which ones are on my shelves unless I have already read it (I am guilty of bringing home books from the library that I own - usually as an ebook...). I may have to declare 2014 the year of reduced library visits. (Like how I don't take it out completely? I still have books on request! I can't go cold turkey :P )

  4. Does Fanfic count? I was well on my way last year until the fanfic bug bit me in the ... bits.

  5. I'm up. But I really think that fanfics should count... Look, if it has more than, I don't know, 60.000 words, that's a book. I'm reading one this week, with 82.000 words, it's HUGE and it should count in the year list. Even more, if I consider it isn't in my native language.

  6. Yay I'm in for the 52 books challenge again! I more than doubled the number last year so I'm feeling pretty good about myself :) Disclaimer: Half were children books, I'm revisiting a lot of the books that got me into reading, and mangas that read so fast. I already have 3 books read for this year but it might stay a while at this number since I'm reading A clash of kings.

  7. I'm in! I can totally read 52 books this year. I like the idea of reading of chapter a night. I've been wanting to reread The Lord of the Rings books for a while now. I'm going to try it but I already foresee having a hard time reading just one chapter when the books get interesting. I get sucked in even if I've already read them.
