A Lenghty List of all of your Favorite Female SF/F Authors

by Sara N.

Looking for a new author to pick up? Have I got some suggestions for you.

Last week, I asked you all to list your favorite female sci fi/fantasy authors in an effort to shake off the bad ju ju from recent news stories. And boy, did you ever. All told, the commenters and my own suggestions created a list of 107 female authors, a few of whom aren't strictly speaking SF/F, but hey, we're all friends here.

I've compiled all of the suggestions into an alphabetized list. Save it, print it, take it to the bookstore with you this weekend. (Because I couldn't handle the non-roundness of the final number, I added Divergent's Veronica Roth so we could make it to 108.)

Behold the crazy long list:

I don't know about you, but that's a list full of authors I've read and loved, authors I've read and didn't love, and authors I've never heard of but would love to read. (I have to admit, I was surprised that vampire queen Anne Rice didn't get mentioned. But I'm also OK with that because as it turns out, Anne Rice is kind of a dick.)

Still don't see your favorite female author on the list? Let me know in the comments, and I'll get her added!

  1. Consider me as another vote for Marissa Meyer!! Seriously, Cinder and Scarlet are both fantastic.

Also, Jennifer L. Nielsen. The False Prince is a really great book.

  2. Oops, be careful what you say about Anne Rice or she might sic her horde of rabid fans on you.

Wow, that's a lot of authors to get caught up on. I just discovered Elizabeth Moon last year. She had me hooked from page one, which is pretty rare. I read five of her books in a row.

    1. Ha! Yeah, we'd better keep it down over here.

    1. Funny! My husband just reread his favorite series of hers and encouraged me to pick them up, too. I'll have to do that. :)

  4. In alphabetical order, some surprising omissions: Rachel Aaron, Tanya Huff, and Michelle Sagara (West). I love these ladies... I know I'm forgetting someone else too and it saddens me...

  5. You should add Marjorie Liu and Pamela Dean.

  6. Not exactly new, but since people like Anne McCaffery are there, what about Marion Zimmer Bradley (Darkover series, etc), or Andre Norton (Witchworld), James Tiptree Jr/Alice B Sheldon, Diana Paxton, Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series), Katherine Kerr, CL Moore (Jirel of Joiry short stories), Hope Mirlees (Lud-in-the-Mist) and from the Star Trek stable, DC Fontana and Diane Duane?
