When You're Good to Gaia...

by Megan S.

Oh no! Not my period! However will I go rollerblading or horseback riding this week?
...Gaia's good to you, and I ain't talking about the lady who, according to Tampax, is defeated by a well-designed tampon.  I'm referring, of course, to the mama of all leading ladies, Mother Nature. Though the spirit of Earth doesn't often play a role in many modern day fantasy tales, the goddess wields some serious ecologically-based power when she does appear on screen.  (Think more Queen Latifah as Mama in Chicago and less the lady who shows up to torment you with your period every month.)

And what better day to celebrate everybody's favorite lady in green than on Earth Day? So, that's what we're doing with this meager modest list of of her best on screen appearances.

Captain Planet

Planet schmanet, the dude had a mullet. Gaia is the one with the true power in the animated television series Captain Planet.  Gaia, in a role much like Charlie of Charlie's Angels, doesn't often directly involve herself in the Planeteers' fight against Big Bads hellbent on destroying the environment.  Instead, she recruit the Planeteers, provide guidance, and supplies the tools necessary to kick polluter butt.

The Year Without Santa Claus

If there's anybody in this world who can strike fear into the hearts of men guilt you into doing the right thing, it's your mother.  Mrs. Claus certainly knows this when she appeals to Mother Nature to talk some sense to her stubborn boys.  Mama's intervention helps free a reindeer and bring about a miracle for Southtown.

The Santa Clause 3

OK.  I'll 'fess up. Mother Nature doesn't play a big role in either The Santa Clause 2 or 3.  She is, however, played by the awesome gamer and brainiac Aisha Tyler which definitely earns her a spot on this list.

Stargate: SG-1

Oma Desala fights for civil rights (kind of) as SG-1's.  According to Daniel Jackson, her name literally translates to Mother Nature.  She skirts the Ancients' version of the Prime Directive in order to help guide individuals on the path to ascension like she does for Daniel.
