The 52 Book Challenge!

I may be a little book crazy ("a little?!" shouts someone from the peanut gallery) so I keep a list of all the books I read every year. I've been doing this since about 2007 and I average in the high forties. In 2012, I dropped the ball a little and only got through 45 books. Part of me blames it on the GIANT tomes I read this year, like the brilliant Riyria Revelations books by Michael J Sullivan (each thick book was around 800 or 900 pages!), but part of me blames just general laziness. I'm only human and some days I opted for a marathon of Indiana Jones movies instead of an afternoon of book reading. It happens.

Not this year. This year I will read FIFTY TWO books. That's roughly a book a week. I am calling it the 52 Book Challenge and I'm inviting you along for the ride.

The rules are simple; read, read and read! Keep a list of the books you read (titles, author, and the page numbers) and try to make it to fifty two before 2013 ends. I am low tech as hell so I just keep my list in a word doc on my computer, but you can use Good Reads, a note program on your smart phone, a journal, anything your heart desires. Just make it to fifty two books!

Now, in my head, I've made up a list of things that count and don't count towards this lofty goal. Things that do count: fiction, non-fiction, e-books, bound comic book volumes, anthologies and short stories. Things that do not count: newspapers, magazines, single issue comics (like a weekly Batman comic as opposed to a bound volume of The Killing Joke), websites and social media. Easy enough?

I'm already two books in to the challenge, fifty more to go! Let's get moving, people! Time to get your brains in gear and pledge to read 52 books in 2013!

Ready, set, GO!!!

  2. I did this with GoodReads last year, the problem with that is if you reread a book it won't count it again. I went over my goal of 50 books, so this year I uped it to 75.
