Celeb Gossip Fills X-Files Shippers' Hearts With Hope

by Sara N.

I don't care that it's probably not true. I don't care that it's being reported by the no-doubt disreputable Celebrity Dirty Laundry. I don't even care that David Duchovny is making whatever that face is that he's making in this photo.

The rumor is that former X-Files costars Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are secretly dating and have been for a while now.

Forget Peter and Olivia. Never mind about Harry and Hermoine. And don't even get me started on Dean and Castiel. Mulder and Scully were my first and most enduring 'ship.

Look, I know that the pair are not, in fact, FBI agents who are key figures in an ongoing government charade — the plot to conceal the truth about the existence of extraterrestrials. I acknowledge that they're not involved in a global conspiracy, with key players in the highest levels of power, that reaches down into the lives of every man, woman and child on the planet. Fine. I get it.

And yet, it's hard to separate the actors from the characters because the characters the actors created were so indelible. Has television ever shown a relationship as deep and intimate, yet chaste and reserved, as Mulder and Scully's? Fans could see the affection, the trust and even the love between the two, but it was almost never expressed physically. We had to content ourselves with brief touches (Mulder teaches Scully how to bat!) and near misses (The first movie when they came thisclose to kissing before that damn bee screwed everything up? Torture!).

The happiest New Year's Eve ever.
Every Sunday night, we'd tune in and pore over every glance, every smile, every raised eyebrow. Subtext and subtlety became everything, although the show also offered us many delicious teases: Mulder and Scully go undercover as a married couple! Mulder's doppelganger makes a move on Scully — on two different occasions! Mulder and Scully share the most exciting yet insanely closed-mouth New Year's Eve kiss ever! I loved it all. These were the characters that defined UST and launched a thousand fanfics* when the Internet was still young.

In light of all of this, you'll forgive me for secretly hoping that the no-doubt false rumor that the actors behind these characters are romantically involved is actually true.

God help me, I want to believe.

*P.S. If anyone can point me to the fanfic where Mulder and Scully go to the FBI ball (Yes, yes. Just go with it.) and Scully wears a daring burgundy dress and there's some sexytimes in an elevator, I'd be much obliged. I'm, uh, asking for ... a friend.

  1. I honestly kind of hope this is not true. Duchovny is an utter trainwreck.

  2. Yeah, I've made myself willfully blind to the sex addiction thing.

  3. Give the poor guy a break. I'd be so very happy too. :-D I wish I remembered the name of the fix, but an awesome one too is "Spell" by Kelli Rocherolle.

    1. I finally found it! It took all of my google-fu to discover that it's Hardball by Missy Pennington. It's ... it's a good deal cheesier than I remembered.
