Geek Gift Ideas: Father's Day

by Megan S.

What do you get the dad who loves Scotch whisky and Norse mythology or, at least, Scotch and The Avengers

The first in Highland Park's limited edition Valhalla collection, Thor and the next three yet-to-be-released whiskys are inspired by the Norse gods and the packaging by the designs of traditional Viking long ships.  Only 1500 bottles of the Scotch made by the single malt whisky company established in 1798 have been released in the United States and 23,000 world wide.

The Scotch will set you back a pretty penny (you can find it online for about $200) and is described as...

Appearance: Rich amber, with an iron ore glow

Nose: Concentrated and forceful, with an explosion of aromatic smoke, pungent fresh ginger, antique copper, stewed plums, and golden syrup. With water, earthy notes emerge, like a garden after a heavy rain shower.

Palate: Thor’s high strength grabs the palate and refuses to let go. Initially dry, with fiery gingerbread then vanilla, blackberries, fresh mango, peach and hints of cinnamon. As its big flavours swirl around the mouth, some softer, sweeter notes develop, giving Thor and unexpected layer of complexity and depth.

Finish: The finish thunders on, leaving behind lingering notes of sweet vanilla and an intense spiciness.

The Cocktail Enthusiast writes, "The result is a bold and powerful whisky that pays tribute to the Norse god as well as the whisky’s seaside distillery. It’s intensely aromatic and flavorful, but smoke and spice marry gently with softer fruit notes for added complexity."
