An Update on Pottermore: A Magical Online Treasure Hunt?

by Sara N.

Last week, we told you about a mysterious new Harry Potter website that had popped up, promising more information to come and prompting a flurry of excited speculation all over the internet. The Guardian is reporting today that the new project is an online treasure hunt game that "gives users clues which will lead them to prizes hidden in the real world." The Guardian, which learned the information from a memo that was accidentally sent to a media outlet, reports that the prizes are magic wands hidden around the U.K. and the U.S.

I understand, guys. I'm disappointed that it's not another book, too.
The Guardian is reporting that J.K. Rowling is scheduled to give an announcement about the project on Thursday. Here's hoping she'll fill in all the missing details. Until then, we'll have to rely on speculation.

So if this turns out to be true, will you follow the clues to snag your own magic wand, Potter fans?

  1. I'll be disappointed if this is what it is.

  2. Danielle,

I think that this probably is it rather than a new book. I saw some supposed leaked screen shots the day after the PotterMore website went live and it looked like a more intense version of her old JKRowling site. I didn't mention them on S4 'cause I couldn't find anything to back it up.

My sucks-lemons-for-fun Ethics in Journalism professor in undergrad would be so proud. [Insert eye roll here.]

  4. I'm a current sucks-lemons-for-fun Ethics in Journalism professor, and I felt a little bad relying on just one media source without verifying the facts myself. :)

And I, too, am disappointed. I knew a new book was a long shot, but it didn't keep me from hoping ...

  5. Sara-

Ha! This isn't the same thing at all. The Guardian is a way more reliable source than a FB page some no name fan created.

  6. Dear Sara,

Do you, in fact, suck lemons for fun?

    Your pal,

  7. You can click on the owls on the site now, and it confirms this.

  8. Boooooo. That's what I say.

  9. I will have you know that I only suck lemons on the weekends, and then only when they're in season. As if I would lower myself to consider an out-of-season lemon.

  10. I'm totally stoked at the prospect of finding a wand! C'mon guys! It'll be fun! I love scavenger hunts, and I was not expecting a new book anyhow.
