Kick-Ass Princesses

by Megan S.

In less than 24 hours, Kate Middleton is going to be a princess.  While we here at Stellar Four love drooling over princess-y things like gorgeous gowns and anything that sparkles, the thing we love most about a princess is when they're kicking some serious ass (be it literal or figurative.)  So, without further ado, here's a list of royal ladies we hope Ms. Middleton will draw inspiration from as soon as she dons her tiara.

Princess Leia Organa

Princess Leia was a member of the Imperial Senate as a representative of her adoptive planet of Alderaan.  The young politician used her status to run diplomatic missions that served as fronts for her efforts to aid the rebels in their quest to overthrow the despotic Emperor Palpatine.  (Leia performs loads of other heroic acts like going undercover to save Han and convincing the Ewoks to help the Rebel Alliance but we're just referencing what our princesses did in their official capacities.)

Diana of Themyscira

Like most comic book characters, Wonder Woman's story has evolved over the decades.  The princess was created by psychologist and creator of the polygraph, William Marston, as a new type of superhero, one that would triumph over evil with the power of love and would serve as a role model for the type of women that should be running the planet.  Though her origin story has changed over the years, Diana has always been a warrior and an emissary of peace.

Once a ruthless warlord, Xena traveled the land righting wrongs and helping good triumph over evil in the warrior princess's quest for redemption.

Princess Fiona

Fiona may have started out as the typical damsel in distress but as she grew older, she also grew more empowered.  The princess organized a resistance to thwart Prince Charming's invasion as well as becoming the leader of a band of ogre resistance fighters in an alternate universe.

Princess Elizabeth

Princess Elizabeth was destined to marry Prince Ronald but her future was put in jeopardy when a dragon kidnapped her fiance and burned all of her clothes.  Instead of fretting, she donned a paper bag and set out to rescue Ronald.  She conquered the dragon and freed her prince but, after he rejected her for looking so unprincess-like, Elizabeth decided she was better off without him and ditched the jerk.

Princess Adora

Adora wasn't always aware of her royal roots.  She had been kidnapped as a baby and separated from her twin brother, Prince Adam.  The princess was raised by a member of the Evil Horde and spelled into following their evil ways without question.  After she learned of her birthright and was embraced by her true family, leaving the Horde behind, Adora was gifted with the Sword of Protection.  The weapon allowed her to transform into She-Ra, Princess of Power.  Like her brother, she did all she could to protect her people.  Unlike her brother, she preferred to use her wits to overcome her adversaries rather than by brute force.

Any kick-ass princesses you'd like to add to the list?  Let us know in the comments!

  1. Just because I'm playing through it now and thus thinking about it, I'm going to give a shout out to Princess Ashe from Final Fantasy XII, who went undercover to lead a rebellion against the evil empire that took over her homeland of Dalmasca.

  2. I can't believe you put in Princess Elizabeth!! I thought I was the only one who knew of that book! It was totally the anti-princess story.

  3. Asher- Good call!

Laura- Dude! You have to google "the paper bag princess." There were the most amazing cosplay paper dresses out there.

  4. Princess Cimorene from Patricia Wrede's "Enchanted Forest Chronicles" (aka "Dealing with Dragons", "Searching for Dragons" etc). She saves herself from an unwanted marriage by becoming a willing princess to a dragon. She goes on (in her official capacity as Kazul's princess) to learn a fireproofing spell, out-wit a djinn, turn away numerous princes (including the one she was supposed to marry, and prepare a feast for dragons culminating with buckets of cherries jubilee. Not necessarily in that order. Oh yeah, she also rescues a Stone Prince and saves a King. Whoot!
